Savant's new personal home control app is unlike anything you've seen | Inside Space Blog | Inside Space Electronics (1)

Continuing our series of home automation innovations showcased at this year's CEDIA Expo, next on my visit to the show was the booth of Savant Systems, whose presence in the home control room has exploded over the past few years.

(Video) 60 Second Smart Home Review - The Savant SmartControl 12

Savant had a lot to announce at the show -- including new WiFi and Ethernet controllers; new pricing, starting at $799 for a single-room Savant Host controller; new Pro Series controllers, offering adaptive phase dimmers and more advanced lighting controls; and a new premium subscription service called Savant Plus, which allows homeowners full remote access to their Savant systems for $150 per year (after a free 90-day trial).

But by far the biggest news is the new Savant app, which provides unified, personalized control over lighting, entertainment, safety and comfort, from a smart, intuitive, fully personal interface that simplifies the control interface to the bare essentials essentials without sacrificing functionality.

I mean personally. When you open the new Savant app, the first thing you see is a screen with every room in your home. And not just a simple list; I mean you're actually looking at pictures of your living room, your kitchen, your bedroom, your dining room. Or it could be a stylized image representing each of these spaces. Or, if you prefer, you can go all out and take a photo of each family member, then quickly assign the headshot to his or her room, with a family photo representing the common living area.

From this home screen, no matter how it's represented graphically, you can quickly see the status of each room, including which AV source is playing, lighting status, temperature, security settings, and more without pressing another button.

Press a button in one of these rooms, and you'll start digging into deeper controls. For example, pressing the small light bulb at the bottom of the screen brings up the lighting control slider for that room. You'll know it's playing if the Apple TV icon appears on the screen, but give it a plug and you can easily switch to another source - your satellite receiver, TiVo, Blu-ray player, music server.

However, this is where things get really cool. Most professionally installed home control systems today allow you to set your own lighting scenes. But the new Savant app takes things a step further, allowing you to create scenarios that capture the state of any and all controlled equipment. Let's say you're hosting a dinner party and want everything in your home to be as it is when guests arrive. With the new Savant app, you can walk around your home hours or days in advance, adjusting every light, turning on your music source, arranging your playlists, and when everything is set up just the way you want it, you can capture your status Home - in a room or per room - make small adjustments, then save it as a custom scene with your own personal image. Maybe a screenshot of tonight's main course.

I've seen a lot of home automation UIs in my day -- heck, I've written a lot of them myself -- but I've never seen anything like this. Especially with this level of intuitive end-user customization.
