A 'solar tree', with a 7m-wide canopy and leaves made from nano-solar cells, will soon appear in UK car parks.Scroll through the gallery to learn more.

Developed by British startup SolarBotanic Trees and shown here in a rendering, the concept aims to provide an aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly solution to charging electric vehicles. It is one of many urban solar solutions designed to help transition energy from fossil fuels to renewables.

Installing solar panels in parking lots is becoming more common, but often they come in the form of solar carports that span the parking lot and provide both shelter and power. In 2020,disneyland parisStarted building the solar panels that cover its guest parking lot. When complete, it will be one of the largest examples in Europe, covering 20 hectares and generating enough energy to account for around 17 percent of the resort's current electricity consumption.

These giant "energy trees" were exposed toExpo 2020 Dubai Sustainability Pavilion.Like sunflowers, the trees rotate throughout the day to follow the sun's rays, and the energy generated is used to power the building's cooling system, as well as for water collection and recycling.

Solar energy can also be used to power electric vehicles on the move. Thatlight years 0, whose production begins in 2022, has curved solar panels on the roof, hood and trunk that can charge the battery while driving.

Also installed solar panels"Stella Vita" Campervan, powered entirely by solar energy. Created by students at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, it traveled nearly 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) across Europe in 2021 without stopping to refuel or plug in to recharge.

In some cities, architects are using solar energy to build buildings designed to generate more energy than they consume. Deloitte headquarters in Amsterdam hasSolar panelsOn the south side of the building, it provides energy for the heating and cooling unit, as well as powering employees' laptops and smartphones.

Scientists are also developing a more potent formsolar cell technology, made of a group of materials called perovskites. Their flexibility and light weight mean they can be easily wrapped around buildings and provide solar power, as shown in this rendering.
How Solar Energy Can Power Our Cities
CNN—
Metal trees with 7-metre-high solar-panel canopies could soon appear in car parks and shopping centers across the UK.
The structures will capture solar energy via nano-photovoltaic "leaves" and be able to store it in batteries located in the trunk, designed by UK start-up SolarBotanic Trees to charge as a power source for electric vehicles (EVs). The company recently completed a half-scale prototype of the device and is now looking to build and test a full-scale version before commencing commercial production by the end of the year.
In the UK, charging infrastructure is developing rapidly, with more than40,000 public charging pointsInstalls by the end of April 2023, up 37% from the previous year, according to EV mapping service ZapMap. But that still can't keep up with demand, and Britain'sclimate committeeIt is estimated that 325,000 charging points will be needed by 2032 to support the growing electric fleet.
"There is a severe lack of (charging) infrastructure in this country, so we want to work hand-in-hand with EV infrastructure suppliers," said Chris Shelley, CEO of SolarBotanic Trees, adding that the company has already received offers from EV charging infrastructure providers. order for the first 200 trees from Raw Charging Group, which the company plans to use as part of itsCharge point networkLaunched in the UK and Europe.

SolarBotanic Trees has partnered with RAW Charging to offer co-branded trees (shown here in a rendering) as part of a network of electric vehicle charging stations.
A number of companies already offer solar carports, which span multiple parking spaces and look like bus baskets with solar panels on top, but lack aesthetic solutions, Shelley said. The Solar Tree, in the form of which was previously contained inGardens by the Bay, Singaporedevelopment and recentExpo 2020 Dubai Sustainability Pavilion, can provide, he said.
But while Dubai's 18 Energy Trees are covered by nearly 4,000 square meters of solar panels and rotate throughout the day to follow the sun's arc, the SolarBotanic Trees - standing about 4.5 meters (15 feet) tall - are more space-efficient, allowing them to Easier to add to public places. Solar domes provide both shade and appeal to luxury hotels, shopping malls, corporate headquarters and business parks, and they wanted a premium and visible product to showcase their green credentials, Shelley said.

SolarBotanic Trees can cost between £18,000 and £25,000 ($22,000 to $30,000), much more than traditional solar panel sources. They will have a power production capacity of 5 kilowatts, which is typical for a standard charge pointEnergy Saving Trust(EST), a UK-based organization specializing in low-carbon solutions. With that amount of power, it takes nearly seven hours to charge a car with a 50-kilowatt battery from 20 percent to 80 percent.
“This charge point speed is better suited for situations where the vehicle is idle for long periods of time,” said Rachel Swiatek, EST Transportation Program Manager, adding, “There are many different charge point types and power outputs on the market, each of which is suitable for different types of vehicles. use."

Huge solar trees are being used to generate electricity during Expo 2020 Dubai.
The startup is also hoping to design a smaller, more affordable 3.2-kilowatt version, which Shelley says could cost between £10,000 and £15,000 ($12,000 to $18,000). Suitable for college campuses, shopping malls, city centers and other venues, this model can be used in a variety of applications ranging from charging smartphones and laptops to LED lighting or electronic advertising. Shelley noted that he is also exploring creating a solar tree solution to power a charging center for electric scooters.
Each tree will be equipped with an artificial intelligence-driven energy storage and power management system, and multiple trees can be connected to form a local microgrid, or a single tree can be connected to the national grid so that any excess energy generated can be fed back to the in the grid. It also means that the tree can continue to charge on dark nights or dark winter days by drawing on electricity from the grid.
But to reduce reliance on the grid, the startup also plans to integrate a battery storage system into the trunk so that excess energy during the day can be stored for use at night.
SolarBotanic Trees has raised £340,000 ($420,000) and hopes to start a funding round by the end of the year after full-scale prototype testing. By 2025, Shelley hopes to build at least 1,000 trees a year.
The company will build its first tree in the UK before expanding to Europe and North America, Shelley said.
